A Torre

2021

The project has as its starting point the Legend of Barbadão, its history and direct connection with the city of Barcelos to give rise to the possibility of building a Tower. In the Legend, the Duke halts the raising of some towers so that they do not get higher as its own place, the Ducal Palace, giving rise to the famous statue of the man pulling his own beard, Barbadão. However, what really happened is shrouded in mystery, in an ambiguous space between reality and fiction, between facts and popular rumours. Is it a Tower, an architectural, monumental and military structure, demarcated by its verticality, a means to raise questions and hypotheses about power relations? To speculate on an idea of conquest, occupation and status? Is it a symbolic attempt to transport the towers that were left unbuilt in the past to the present, in the creation of a uchronia (in an attempt to formulate an alternative history)? Carried by the performer, a Tower, in a disruption of everyday life, circulates and wanders through the city, culminating in its arrival at the square that connects and confronts the Paço dos Duques with the Solar dos Pinheiros, main scenarios of the original legend, now recreated and contextualized in a new fiction that is inserted in everyday life.
